Four Books

Category : Uncategorized

So I have decided to do some book reviews from time to time, since my nose is always in a book. I have a goodreads account but I pretty much just use that to catalog the books I have read and want to read. I downloaded a pretty script font to make the reviews all spiffy. There are four reviews listed here of books I have read in the recent past. I plan to do another book review featuring four more books that I received as Christmas gifts. Here goes nothing.

storysistersby Alice Hoffman is probably one of my favorites by her. I enjoyed her other novels such as, Local Girls, Practical Magic, and The Ice Queen. However, some of her more recent works such as, Skylight Confessions and The Third Angel could not hold my interest. However, The Story Sisters seemed very reminiscent of Practical Magic and Local Girls since all these books focus mainly on woman, and then also on sisters. The three sisters in the book are very similar in appearance, but very different as far as personalities go. The book not only deals with sisterhood but also with jealously, loyalty and friendship. This book has a magical element to it as the girls seem like ethereal goddesses and enough charm to weave their own magic. For anyone who is a fan of Alice Hoffman, I highly recommend this latest novel.

prettydeadby Francesca Lia Block is a novella about, you guessed, a vampire. Now, I know some young adult readers are getting a little tired of the young adult section being turned into the vampire section, but I plead with you to hold out for this book and not just because I am a huge fan of Block (I have read everything by her). The novella may seem like a vampire story that is like all the rest, but I assure you that it is not. This vampire story has a beautifully crafted twist which I thoroughly enjoyed. Like all Block’s writing, this story is highly descriptive and the language is almost lyrical. Another Francesca Lia Block book for my shelf.

handsandteethby Carrie Ryan is probably the only truly good zombie book I have ever read. The main family in the book are practically living in a gated community in an attempt to keep the Unconsecrated out, but that plan fails. Many of the main character’s (Mary), family and friends become Unconsecrated themselves as she and a few others struggle to break from the undead groups and search for other remaining humans. This book was a page turner and I had a hard time putting it down to go to sleep. I highly recommend this book even if you are not a big zombie fan. You may change your mind after reading this Carrie Ryan novel.

dearjohnby Nicholas Sparks is very bittersweet. I am concerned about the movie because I am afraid they will change parts of the book and possibly the ending to make it more “Hollywood” and less bittersweet. The book is very Sparks-esque as it features his major theme: love. I have read only two other books by him which included, Message in a Bottle and A Walk to Remember. I have to admit that I am not a huge Sparks fan but I gave this book a chance and I am glad that I did. The central characters are John and Savannah who fall in love (during the summer), and then have to say goodbye as John is enlisted in the military and he is sent off. They communicate through a series of letters while he is away. After some time her letters come less frequently. This story takes an unexpected turn and leaves the reader longing. I was happy that I gave this novel by Nicholas Sparks a chance, and I hope you will too.

Pluto (or whatever we are calling him today)

Category : Furbabies, Uncategorized

Pluto is a seven week old kitten that I now take care of. As I mentioned in my last post I got him from a co-workers daughter. He’s pretty adorable, when he isn’t chewing on cords or clawing at the couch cover. There has been a lot of debate over his name. At first I named him Cloud. But after saying it for a day, it didn’t seem right. Pluto actually has a story behind it between my room-mate and I. A few weeks ago I was driving to the library with Mat to drop off some books. By the library for whatever reason there is a sign that has painting or photo of Pluto in the background and has some info on it (even though it’s not a planet any more). I haven’t actually gone up to the sign to read it. Anyways, while we were driving by it I said “Why do they have a sign up about Pluto? Why a sign about Pluto?” But I pronounced it Pahluto, both times. He thought this was hilarious, and laughed for quite a long time. So when I realized the name Cloud wasn’t working for me, I said to Mat, “What about Pahluto?” We both decided it was perfect. I pronounce it correctly and only incorrectly when making the cute baby voice at the kitten. I call him Luto for short as well.

Mutti, Vati, some friends and others make a face when I tell them his name. I think it’s perfect. Frankly the more people that dislike it, the more I’m sticking with the name. Vati calls him Cloud and Mutti calls him many things. When I didn’t have a name for him I was calling him munchkin.

My biggest concern was how Zoe and him were going to get along. My vet warned me that at first Zoe would probably hiss, swat at and then run away from him. She said this could last up to a week or two. I was very nervous about this. I put Pluto in his crate and let Zoe approach him with the cage bars between them so she couldn’t hurt him. For the first two days all she did was hiss and bat at him. And then something changed because overnight they are now best buds. She’s still a little too rough when playing sometimes, so  I have to separate them at times. He’s really not scared of her anymore because he will stalk and pounce on her. Zoe has become a little protective of him as well. For the past few nights she will lay right outside his crate until he settles down and falls asleep. It’s really sweet.

Okay I’m done. You are all probably tired of reading about my cats. I’m becoming a crazy cat lady.

What are you waiting for?

Category : Uncategorized

I am waiting for all things to work out in the end. I am waiting for you to do more than just hear what I say, but to actually listen. I am waiting for life to begin. And sometimes end. I am selfishly waiting for it all to fall in my lap. I am waiting to find out. I am waiting for you. I am waiting for the bonds to break. I am waiting for the right moment. I am waiting to take the plunge. I am waiting for you to notice. I am waiting for the tears, the laughter, the joy, the sorrow, the happiness, the pain. I am waiting for the fun. I’m waiting for you to ask. I am waiting until the last page, the last sentence. I am waiting for my dreams. I am waiting for my life. I am waiting to breathe. I am waiting for that breath to begin my apology. I am waiting in my fear. I am waiting…

Too Long

I have rewritten this post at least three times now. It’s been almost two months since I last blogged. That is crazy to me. I guess life just got a little busy. I do have a full load with both work and classes. This semester I am taking 13 credits. It will be my last semester at community college. I have to be sure of what I want to get my bachlor’s in by November 7th, when I sign up for classes at university. I’m nervous as all hell. Probably because lately I’ve been changing my major about as often as I change clothes. I need to really sit down and do some soul searching. I also want to get in contact with some professors and some friends. I desperately want to talk to my friend Beth. I am out of work at 3 tomorrow, so calling her is my priority when I get out of work…after I get my car washed.

Oh yeah…last week, I hit my brothers car. Oops. What’s funny is I stepped out on the porch and saw his car next to me. I remember thinking that he must have come home from school sometime while I was asleep. I got in my car, and forgot his was there. I started to back out and started to turn. Needless to say I felt a little resistance. Slight dent in his car. Football sized dent in my car. Very nice. It adds character.

And for those who were wondering I did not win the Canon photography contest. I am however entering in the Nikon one. Everyone cross their fingers for this one. I shall post the photos I enter in a post here. Sometime. No seriously, I don’t plan on taking two months off again without any notice.

I recently purchased Photoshop CS3 and am taking digital imaging 2. I need to resubscribe my deviantart account and I shall put my new projects up shortly. Give me a week.

I’ve just been notified I need to renew this site. I have to do that soon as well. exploding-girl has just been collecting dust. I am finally going to transfer it. What I will do with it after that, who knows.
