Compassion(less)

For more than five years I have worked in a retail pharmacy. One of the first credos we are taught is in order to be good pharmacy technicians is to show compassion and sympathy to those who are sick. We are supposed to be helpful and compassionate even if the person in front of us is screaming obscenities because their co-pay is too high. We are to keep in mind the fact that they are not feeling well and probably just waited hours to see a doctor. They are miserable, tired and sick. But somehow, bosses and co-workers cannot extend the same courtesy to sick workers.

I have noticed over the past five years that bosses and some co-workers are not exactly forgiving when it comes to calling off due to sickness. And that is honestly putting it politely. There is usually yelling, gossiping, backstabbing and sometimes maneuvering. And by maneuvering I mean that I have seen my fair share of co-workers get shipped off to work at another branch of the company because of “too many” call-ins.

So I find it a bit stressful and irritating that after a night with a high fever, no sleep, and constant vomiting that I have to then work myself up to make the “I’m not coming in,” phone call and then have to worry about what is being said or done behind my back. It’s really quite sad, that those who you are with for eight hours a day, for five years or more, cannot understand that when you are sick and need to call off, they cannot extend some compassion and simply say ,”I hope you feel better soon.”

  1. That sounds shitty…excuse my language.

  2. You have some seriously horrible co-workers. I can understand being irritated if a person consistently misses work or if a person consistently doesn’t participate in office activities. But this is freaking ridiculous. Best of luck!
